Are Red Cars Linked to Car Accidents

At one point or another, you have probably heard someone claim that red cars are the most likely to be ticketed by police, but why is this?

This may sound like simply an urban legend, but studies have shown that time and time again, this fact seems to be confirmed as true.

In addition, red cars have been said to be the most likely to be involved in car accidents. Although this has not been proven, there is a psychology behind why both these facts may be linked.

The Psychology of the Color Red

Out of all the colors on the color wheel, red tends to evoke the most intense emotions. Unlike blue, the color of the sky and the sea, which tends to bring calming effects to people, red is fiery and can evoke strong feelings of anger and passion.

When those emotions are brought to the road, it is easy to see that drivers who drive a red car may experience higher levels of anger than drivers with different colors. Men driving red vehicles are even more likely to have higher testosterone levels, which can lead to a more aggressive driving style.

Are Red Cars Dangerous?

Interestingly enough, due to limited visibility, black cars are the most likely to be involved in car accidents, especially at night — with a 47% higher probability at night than other colored vehicles.

Red cars have a similar accident risk as blue cars, with a 7% higher probability than other colored vehicles.

So maybe red cars aren’t inherently more dangerous, but they can inspire more aggressive driving patterns. No matter what, it is important to take precautions and be aware at all times of the day when operating a vehicle.
