The typical American adult spends a larger percentage of their time at work than at home. With so many hours devoted to our jobs, your employer must provide you with workers’ compensation if anything were to happen to you at work.
However, sometimes injuries happen outside of work but are technically work-related. In these cases, it is important to understand how workers’ compensation could potentially affect you.
Injured Outside of Work
In Oregon, you can receive up to 100% compensation for any injuries that may happen to you while on the clock. This general rule does not include lunch breaks or commuting to and from work. However, there are some exceptions to injuries incurred outside of the office that still would apply for compensation. Some instances are as follows:
- Work premises. Entering the premises of your work is often when workers’ compensation goes into effect. This could include parking lots, grassy areas, and sidewalks.
- Performing errands. If your boss/manager often asks you to run errands on your lunch break or after work hours, you may be able to receive workers’ compensation. One eligible example could be if you were going to pick up more staples for the office and then got rear-ended at a red light.
- Employer benefits. If you are required to do something off the clock that directly benefits your employer such as attending a conference after work hours, you could be eligible for workers’ compensation. This can mean that if you twisted your ankle walking up the stairs of the conference building, you might be able to get money for this injury.
