Do Motorcycle Helmets Expire

Motorcycles are a great way to enjoy the outdoors. Whether you love to cruise around town, or you enjoy a long leisurely road trip, your safety should always be your main concern. When riding on a motorcycle, your protective gear is the only thing between you and the pavement or other vehicles. This is why it is so important to wear the right protective gear, such as riding jackets or at least long-sleeved shirts and pants, gloves, hard-toed boots, and of course your motorcycle helmet.

While helmet laws vary from state to state, they provide crucial protection for your head and brain. Before strapping your helmet on for your next ride, consider if it is time to update your helmet.

Helmet Age

Road-approved helmets come with a manufacturing stamp from the Department of Transportation (DOT). This is usually found under the comfort liner and provides a suggestion of when you should consider replacing your helmet. It is typically recommended you replace your helmet three to five years following the manufacturing date.

General Comfort

Your overall comfort can be a good reason to update your helmet. Your helmet should be snug, but not overly tight. If your helmet fits loosely and moves around easily, you should consider a helmet that is a better fit for your head. You may also consider a replacement if your chin straps are frayed, or your inner padding is no longer as soft as it once was.

Involvement in a Previous Accident

It is always recommended that you purchase a new helmet if you’ve been involved in an accident where the helmet struck the ground or any other hard surface. While your helmet could still appear okay, the interior integrity may have been compromised.

While not inexpensive, your helmet plays an important role in your overall safety while cruising the open road. If you do find yourself involved in a motorcycle accident, we can help. Contact us to learn more today.
