Road-approved helmets come with a manufacturing stamp from the Department of Transportation (DOT). This is usually found under the comfort liner and provides a suggestion of when you should consider replacing your helmet. It is typically recommended you replace your helmet three to five years following the manufacturing date.
General Comfort
Your overall comfort can be a good reason to update your helmet. Your helmet should be snug, but not overly tight. If your helmet fits loosely and moves around easily, you should consider a helmet that is a better fit for your head. You may also consider a replacement if your chin straps are frayed, or your inner padding is no longer as soft as it once was.
Involvement in a Previous Accident
It is always recommended that you purchase a new helmet if you’ve been involved in an accident where the helmet struck the ground or any other hard surface. While your helmet could still appear okay, the interior integrity may have been compromised.
