What Should I Do if Someone Hits My Parked Car

We trust the safety of our vehicle when parking in a grocery store lot, parking on the street in front of a restaurant, and in any other situations where we leave our car at a location other than our driveway. Distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding, and general negligence can still happen in these areas which can result in someone striking your parked vehicle.

Someone striking your parked car is still considered a compensable act. Whether you are parked in a lot, or on the street, it is important to understand what rights you have and the steps you should take following the event.

Treat It Like a Moving Accident

Just because your car was parked doesn’t practically change the laws and rights applied to an accident involving moving vehicles. Similar to other accidents, you’ll want to keep your car where it is. If you can locate the person responsible, it is important to get their information. You’ll also want to call local authorities to the scene, as well as contact your insurer to let them know the situation. While waiting for the police to arrive, you’ll want to document as much evidence as you can concerning the accident. This includes taking your video, as well as seeking any surveillance footage that a store or parking garage may be able to provide.

What If a Person Leaves?

If a person hits your parked vehicle but leaves the scene, it can be considered a hit-and-run. The police may be able to help you find the person responsible for the damage, especially if it was potentially captured by a security camera. This can make your situation a bit more complicated, but generally your uninsured motorist coverage should provide coverage for this type of incident.  Again, it is important to notify the policy and your car insurance of the event in a timely manner.
